INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Mrs. Heather Iverson I never thought I wanted to be a teacher. I never wanted to be a Christian. I just wanted a good job that I could go to in the morning, leave in the evening and have a simple life. That was until I met the Lord. He took me gently, and began to shape me into the person that He created me to be. Everything I thought I wanted, suddenly no longer appealed to me. He began to rekindle in my heart, the love for music I had lost after I left college. I began playing flute during our Sunday service. Soon after, one of the home schooled children at my church began studying flute. Crazy ideas started to fill my head. Wouldn't it be nice if someone started a concert band so that he could play with kids his own age? It didn't occur to me for a while that God was talking to me. He didn't want a previously accomplished band director. He wanted me! I left the corporate world believing that God had called me to teach music. He opened doors for me one after another, holding my hand the entire way. In one evening, seventeen students signed on to study music and form a band made entirely of home schooled children. Immediately, I fell in love with teaching. Prayer after prayer was being answered. Over the year, the ministry continued to grow. I flipped burgers at the local Dairy Queen and taught around that schedule to make ends meet. I desired for nothing less that to devote my life to serving youth by teaching music. The Lord answered that prayer. ACA offered a position teaching 4th -12th band. It is a great privilege to work with the youth at ACA. I encourage the students to approach our music classes in ways that they may not have before. Each one of us has a place in Christ's body. I hope that each student learns where their strengths are and where to apply them. I also hope that they learn to love music along the way. |
