From CSFE training center 2006-

Mom,

I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you something made me think about you today.  Tomorrow is MIA/POW day and I march in a parade to honor those lost in combat and that were a prisoner of war. Senior Chief Lederer (SWC) addressed us today about his thoughts, and they hit home with me (Dad met senior chief when he visited me here). He talked about a woman who was on the news last night who's Marine son was killed in Iraq, and as they interviewed her less than 48 hours from when her son was killed she didn't shed a tear, and her comments to when asked why she was so strong was, "My son was protecting the nation from enemies and events that took place five years and two days ago, he was protecting us when we were asleep and protecting the freedoms of our great nation."

Mother, we both serve our country in our own ways.  You are very involved in politics; you stand on the front line with other people doing the right thing.  You serve the people of our community, state, and overall country.  You impact lives and fight for freedoms in a political war. I have tremendous respect for you and the people you fight with every day, such as the teachers at ACA, the preachers at our churches, and those who politically fight for our religious freedoms. Those are the people that you are fighting with to keep our freedoms to worship our God, to raise families the way they should be raised, to practice in a court of law and have order that our founding fathers set on paper, and lived their lives. The spirit, will, and desires of our founding fathers are in you all, as they are with me.

My service is a little different.  I am preparing to serve my country on a physical war front. I am learning to be ready to defend us from the people who hate our country, our beliefs, and practice things our founding fathers left behind to start a new world, and build a nation for freedom and Democracy.  I am getting the training to proudly and boldly oppose those who oppose Democracy.  Some day inevitably I will be on the front lines and those enemies will come very near, but it's for the protection of what I love at home, my family, my community, my country and freedoms. This is my service to a country that allows us the life we have.  I am proudly an American, as I am a US Navy Soldier. This is how I serve my country, to oppose those who oppose our nation. This is why I am in the Navy. I have never felt more proud to be an American.

Never be afraid of what might happen to me.  I have a lot of faith in my training, and you raised me to be smart.  Those combinations have made me to be at my best.  I excel in everything I am challenged with here and have no fear of what might come with faith in God that He is in control of all things. With the discipline and training instilled in me, it makes me and my brother in arms the most powerful force to oppose anyone who threatens our freedom.

I start every day proudly.  The days I didn't like waking up early are long gone.  It's been months since the first few days of hardship at basic training.  It was a change in my life when I realized the big picture of everything that happens is for a reason, and why the current task may not be enjoyable; I proudly do it because it is benefiting me to serve the nation.  I haven't regretted my choice to serve as a sailor.

If something would ever happen to me, don't get upset, don't be hateful, don't regret.  Know that I too was serving the country that I love.  I love every day in the Navy, and if something happens to me, it was doing something that I love.  I want you to always be proud of what I am doing, as I know you are proud of me now.  We both serve and we both fight for our nation.  I couldn't feel more accomplished as I do now to serve with you as a part of the "Great Americans"!

Lovingly your son,

2002 ACA Graduate
