Preschool Teacher Assistant

I am Laurie Karns and I assist Mrs. Strong with the 3-year-old preschool at Ankeny Christian Academy.

I became a Christian when I was 8 years old. I was having trouble sleeping one night because I was dreaming of Satan and Hell. I ran to my Mom and she comforted me and explained that although Satan was powerful, God was more powerful and able to defeat Satan and his demons. She then explained how if I invited Jesus into my heart, He would forgive me and protect me. I asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life!

Since then my relationship with Christ has had its ups and downs, but I have grown in my faith steadily, mostly through trials. One of those trials occurred in 2005, when I was diagnosed with leukemia - with a 50% cure rate. I spent 68 total days in the hospital enduring 6 rounds of chemotherapy. God not only healed me, but He drew so close to me and encouraged me throughout the journey. He also demonstrated His love toward my family by allowing many Christians from church, ACA, and other groups to be "the hands and feet of Jesus". Meals, laundry, housecleaning, childcare, gift cards, cash, etc. were all provided lovingly. More importantly, the prayer support was an enormous boost! I will be forever grateful to God for my healing and his continual care.

My husband Rich and I were married in 1991. We have 3 children, two whom attend ACA. We are also foster parents, so our family looks different from year to year.
