I was saved at the age of four. My mom was washing the supper dishes and I began to ask her questions about heaven. I had been thinking about heaven and I asked how I could get there. She shared with me John 3:16, John 14:6, and Ephesians 2:8-9. It was there, by the kitchen sink, that I asked Jesus to be my Savior. I knew that I was a sinner and the only way I could go to heaven was to believe that Christ died on the cross for my sins. There was nothing I could do to get there on my own.
When I was in fourth grade I was baptized. I realized that it was one way Christians identify themselves with Christ (1 Peter 3:21). I do not remember the exact date of my baptism, but I do know that at the age of 10 I followed in Christ's steps (Matt 3:13-17) and was baptized. At the time of my baptism, I became a member of First Baptist Church in Creston, Iowa. I served the Lord throughout my Junior High and High school years with my local church. I have gone on numerous mission trips, taught V.B.S., done many music ministries, taught Sunday school, and many other ministries.
While in college, I was a watch-care member of Urbandale Baptist Church. There I served in the choir, AWANA, nursery, special music, and instrumental ensemble. After college I became the 5th-7th grade teacher at Mayflower Heritage School in Creston, Iowa. I also married Juern Akkermann in November of 2006. We served at First Baptist as greeters and taught Junior Church.
We moved to Iowa Regular Baptist Camp where I have been a cook for six years. It was here that we dedicated our marriage to the Lord. After camp we moved to Forest City, Iowa and served at Calvary Baptist Church. I was the director of TREK (7th and 8th grade) in AWANA, a member of the choir, sang/played for special music, played in the instrumental ensemble, and taught Junior Church with my husband.
I attended Faith Baptist Bible College and graduated May 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education (K-6). October 2007 to June 2008 I attended Buena Vista University and obtained my Reading Endorsement.
My life verses are Philippians 4:4-7. "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice! Let your gentleness be made known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
