FROM: Joyce Hansen, ACA Administrator and Tim Olson, Secondary Principal

DATE: February 7, 2012

SUBJECT: Iowa Assessment Information (formerly ITBS/ITED)

This is a reminder that on February 21-24 we will be having students in grades 1-11 take the Iowa Assessments. Kindergarten students will be taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). Iowa Assessments will be available for next year’s kindergarten students.

Attached to this memo is information for you as a parent. All elementary students went through the practice tests with their teachers, and Mr. Stocks went over the practice tests with 7-11 grade students.

Iowa Assessment Message to Parents

Most tests are simply a means to measure what a student has learned. In fact, tests, including standardized achievement tests, are among the most important tools we have for helping students. A good test can identify a student's strengths and weaknesses and determine where that student may need extra help or in what area(s) he or she excels!

At school, we talk about the purpose and importance of testing. We practice various test-taking skills, such as following directions and using time wisely. These activities help students be prepared to do the best they can.

You, too, can help your child do better on tests. Here are some things to do at home.

BEFORE A TEST CHILDREN NEED:

• A full night's sleep

• A good breakfast the day of the test

• Comfortable clothing appropriate for school abiding by dress code

• Your understanding if they are anxious

• Prayer support

SEND ON EACH TESTING DAY:

• 2- #2 Pencils with good erasers

• A bottle of water

• Scratch paper

• All students are encouraged to bring a snack (There will be a snack time provided for all grades, your child must bring their own snack.)

• 6th-11th GRADE STUDENTS ONLY – A Calculator with extra batteries

HOW TO TALK WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT TESTS:

• Mention the purpose and importance of tests – they're designed to help students learn better. Let them know you value tests for that reason.

• Encourage your child to take the test seriously and do as well as he or she can, but add reassurance that the child won't be in trouble for items missed.

• Never add pressure in the form of positive reinforcements or negative consequences attached to test results. Do not make comparisons to siblings.

Remember each child is unique and has his or her own learning style, strengths and desire for success. Stress his/her uniqueness and let your child know you love him or her for it.

The teachers and administration appreciate your support in helping your child be well prepared each day for the various tests that they will encounter. We know that the Lord will provide His peace to all students as they strive to do their best and glorify Him in their efforts!
